VYZ
The Vinalhaven Youth Zone: A Place for Kids to be Kids
Other than the VYZ, the young people of Vinalhaven do not have anywhere to get together and socialize in a safe, supervised environment.
Youth Supervision
Without the oversight provided by the ARC staff, kids on the island are subject to the influences of boredom and unstructured time, which tend to produce poor decisions, risky behaviors, and substance use. "Juvenile crime statistics show that crimes committed by juveniles are most likely to occur on school days in the hours immediately following the end of a school day." –Source
Exercise
Previous to the youth space at the ARC, when they were not in cars or on the street, kids on Vinalhaven were most often found sitting indoors. The VYZ is the only inside space where kids can (and do!) gather to be active.
Social Activities
Beyond the regular hours of operation, the VYZ is available for kids to plan and hold supervised activities and social events.
