Long Cove Farm:
We're a small farm on Vinalhaven Island raising Merino sheep on fields where long ago similar sheep lived. Currently the seven-year-old flock consists of two rams and 28 ewes with approximately one-third black sheep. The sheep are raised for wool and meat. We send out the fleece yearly to be made into yarn and participate in MOFGA's fleece show in September. This year we sheared in May; we have about 200 lbs of wool ready to be sent off for processing in the barn. At this point we have had roughly 100 lambs born here.
While not organic, we try to go as close as possible to that standard while accepting the realities of living on an island. It's only satisfying for us if the animals are well-cared-for and healthy.
Currently also residing on the farm are a small Narragansett turkey flock, Maran chickens for eggs, lots of guinea hens, 40 meat chicks, 4 piglets and a dog.
